NYC Vintage Image Of The Day: 'Little Church Around the Corner'

The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, colloquially known as the Little Church Around the Corner, was built in 1849 on West 29th Street between Madison and Fifith avenues. It is designed in the early Neo-Gothic style to look as though it is set in the English countryside.

I had never seen nor heard of this quaint respite among the area's New York highrises until I wandered by it to meet Leonard recently for an event. Because he used to work on 27th Street, he has known—and cherished— it for decades.

The church was awarded New York Landmark status in 1967, and in 1973 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Postcards are undated, photo above, 1900. Images below: Chuck Taylor.
